Do they know it’s Christmas?

Photos from December 4 at Echo Curio

I wholeheartedly believe this was the best Big Whup show ever. EVER! All the other bands were awesome, too– it was sort of our dream line up: Watercolor Paintings, Cobra Lilies, and So Many Wizards! Amazing. Here are a few photos that Charles took that night. You will notice that I am now singing out of Party (my pink Pegasus)… more on that later.

the truth about B.O.N.I.Z H.E.A.R.T <3<3<3

December 9, 2009

It’s not really about a sea creature, not really not really at all.

Hobbes’ Leviathan is the absolute sovereign, the head of the body politic who rules with sword and staff to conquer chaos/quell civil war/tame state of nature. Published in 1651, the Leviathan features a frontispiece illustration of a monarch whose body is composed of his legion subjects like so many cells and organs and follicles for hair.

Our Leviathan is another, though, one more metaphor removed… Our Leviathan is a past that colonizes a future by dictating which choices will and won’t be made. So the “I” or “Je” in the song is my past. The “you” or “tu” is my future, a.k.a “Afrique”. As for “All the little people”… Who the fuck knows.

Lyrics for interested parties:

Je suis ton propre Leviaton
Je desire
de la
de la
de l’Afrique
ah

I am your very own Leviathan
You are mine, oh what a thrill!

My body is made of
My body is made of
My body is made of
Ah.

Trouble! Uh Oh! Trouble!
We got in Trouble!
Trouble! Uh oh! Trouble!
We got in Trouble!
Trouble! Uh Oh! Trouble!
We got in Trouble!

Je suis ton propre Leviaton
Tu es
mon a
mon a
mon Afrique
ah

My body is made of
(All the little people)
My body is made of
(All the little people)
My body is made of
(All the little people)
Ah.

Flesh, flesh will tear us apart.
Your only hope is my heart.
Flesh, flesh will tear us apart.
Your only hope is my heart.
Flesh, flesh will tear us apart.
My only BONE IS MY HEART.

New song, new videos, new show, BIG WHUP

December 7, 2009

Hi everyone —

It’s been an eventful time for us lately! Thanks to everyone who came out to our show on Friday night at Echo Curio, and to the people who helped get the word out. Here’s a good pic from the night, courtesy of Losang Eles:

We just posted a new song, B.O.N.I.Z. H.E.A.R.T., to our Myspace page. The song features Drew on lead vocals as she tells a pseudo-French tale about a sea creature and luv.

In other news, The Deli Magazine is holding an online poll to determine their next artist of the month, and Big Whup is on the list. Go here to vote for us (the voting is on the right side of the page).

A couple of weeks ago we played on Demolisten. Four videos from that show have been posted on Youtube – click here to go and see the playlist.

On that same night, we played L’keg and Avebury records was there to record it. Thanks Avebury!:

Anyway… We’ve got one more show left before 2009 ends. Come out to Pehrspace on Friday, Dec 11 and help us celebrate a really great year in the Kingdom of Whup. The address on the following flier is wrong – should read “325 Glendale Blvd:”

New videos, Compilation inclusions

September 22, 2009

It’s been a big and fun few weeks for us in Big Whup. We showed you some pictures from our video session with Tony and Gabe, who have now posted “Yaay!” and “Trim” on their website. We’ve linked to the videos below so you can check them out. Thanks again to Tony and Gabe for their friendship and hard work.

We self-released a compilation, through our new Big Whup Industries imprint, at the Smell on Saturday and it was an awesome success! Called “What is Happening…,” the comp features “Yaay!” and “Trim” as well as twenty-one tracks from some of our favorite local and semi-local musicians. Last night Geoff dropped off some free copies of the comp at Pehrspace and Tribal Cafe, and soon it will be available from a vending machine at CalArts for the nominal price of a dollar. You can also just come find us out in the street (use the pictures on this website as a guide), introduce yourself, and ask us for one. We’ve got quite a few.

We’ve also had the pleasure of being included on a couple of other compilations that we didn’t curate ourselves! “Cover My Eyes” is track nine on Radio Free Silverlake’s Fall 2009 mix, and we’re stoked to be lined up with friends we love and admire, like the Happy Hollows and the Monolators. “Trim” has been included as the penultimate track on “Eargasms 6,” a compilation from Vertical House Records in Huntsville, AL that can be downloaded here. In addition to North Alabama heartthrobs like Thomas Function and the Pine Hill Haints, the comp also has a lot of hip and happening touring bands on it, including Times New Viking, Woods, and Jay Reatard. Thanks RFSL’s Joe Fielder and Vertical House’s Ashley and Andy Vaughn for choosing to include our music on their mixes!
