Hi everyone —
It’s been an eventful time for us lately! Thanks to everyone who came out to our show on Friday night at Echo Curio, and to the people who helped get the word out. Here’s a good pic from the night, courtesy of Losang Eles:
We just posted a new song, B.O.N.I.Z. H.E.A.R.T., to our Myspace page. The song features Drew on lead vocals as she tells a pseudo-French tale about a sea creature and luv.
In other news, The Deli Magazine is holding an online poll to determine their next artist of the month, and Big Whup is on the list. Go here to vote for us (the voting is on the right side of the page).
On that same night, we played L’keg and Avebury records was there to record it. Thanks Avebury!:
Anyway… We’ve got one more show left before 2009 ends. Come out to Pehrspace on Friday, Dec 11 and help us celebrate a really great year in the Kingdom of Whup. The address on the following flier is wrong – should read “325 Glendale Blvd:”
It’s been a big and fun few weeks for us in Big Whup. We showed you some pictures from our video session with Tony and Gabe, who have now posted “Yaay!” and “Trim” on their website. We’ve linked to the videos below so you can check them out. Thanks again to Tony and Gabe for their friendship and hard work.
We self-released a compilation, through our new Big Whup Industries imprint, at the Smell on Saturday and it was an awesome success! Called “What is Happening…,” the comp features “Yaay!” and “Trim” as well as twenty-one tracks from some of our favorite local and semi-local musicians. Last night Geoff dropped off some free copies of the comp at Pehrspace and Tribal Cafe, and soon it will be available from a vending machine at CalArts for the nominal price of a dollar. You can also just come find us out in the street (use the pictures on this website as a guide), introduce yourself, and ask us for one. We’ve got quite a few.
We’ve also had the pleasure of being included on a couple of other compilations that we didn’t curate ourselves! “Cover My Eyes” is track nine on Radio Free Silverlake’s Fall 2009 mix, and we’re stoked to be lined up with friends we love and admire, like the Happy Hollows and the Monolators. “Trim” has been included as the penultimate track on “Eargasms 6,” a compilation from Vertical House Records in Huntsville, AL that can be downloaded here. In addition to North Alabama heartthrobs like Thomas Function and the Pine Hill Haints, the comp also has a lot of hip and happening touring bands on it, including Times New Viking, Woods, and Jay Reatard. Thanks RFSL’s Joe Fielder and Vertical House’s Ashley and Andy Vaughn for choosing to include our music on their mixes!

We had so much fun Saturday night at Echo Curio opening for Fol Chen and Pizza! These videos feature the usual suspects: Drew Denny on keys/guitar/vocals, Geoff Geis on guitar/vocals, Jenna Eyrich on bass, Rand Voorhies on drums/vocals plus our lovely friend Morgan Gerstmar on viola/vocals. Enjoy!

We were supposed to play with the Studiofix and Balloon Moon at the Santa Fe Cafe last night, but they up and canceled the show without telling any of the bands! Luckily, Balloon Moon saved the night by hosting the show in their practice space. It was totally packed and sooooo much fun- Thanks guys!!
Here are some videos from the show. It was a special night cause it was Geoff’s first show with us and Drew’s first show playing the keyboard.
“Yay!”—this one’s funny cause Drew couldn’t reach the mic while playing keyboard…
“Trim”—Geoff wrote this song, so this was our first ever performance of it!

In the past few months, Big Whup has been experiencing some changes- we have been losing and gaining weight, growing taller, and noticing hair in new places… You see, we lost a violist to the field of neuroscience, gained a trumpeter from the realm of holistic healthcare, forfeited an accordion player to a hand-drawn universe, and acquired a guitarist from the land of Pizza!. To commemorate those pioneers who are no longer with us, we are posting videos from our very first performances. They’re a bit embarrassing, but we are a tween of a band and not trying to hide it.
“Double Rainbows” from our first ever show- Tiny Creatures with Julia Holter and Pizza!
“Yay!” from our Valentine’s Dance show with the Studiofix and Puppies & Kittens at the now extinct 122 Glendale (a.k.a the Cog, White Slave Trade, Weekend Warriors…)
“Caitlin’s Fast Song” at the Smell
